Questions 1-10
A passage from Fyodor Dostoevsky's 'Crime and Punishment.'
Raskolnikov had a fearful dream.
He dreamt he was back in his childhood, in the little town where he had lived with his family. He was a boy of seven and was walking with his father on the edge of town. It was a holiday, and there were many people in the streets. There was a crowd outside the tavern, and they noticed a cart with a little horse harnessed to it. In the cart sat a peasant, not very drunk, but spruced up, with a whip in his hand and a red face. He was shouting something.
Behind the tavern stood a cart, but this time with a large horse harnessed to it. A crowd of people had gathered round the cart, laughing and calling to each other. The peasant with the little horse wanted to harness it to the cart as well and drive it to market. But the horse was too small, too weak, too thin, and could not draw the cart.
The crowd was laughing at the peasant, and he was getting angry, whipping the horse and shouting. At last, the cart moved, but very slowly. The peasant beat the little horse again and again, but it could barely move. The crowd jeered and shouted, "Whip it harder!"
Raskolnikov was horrified. He wanted to run away, but he was rooted to the spot. He looked on in fear, seeing the horse's suffering and the cruelty of the crowd. The horse was beaten to death, and Raskolnikov woke up trembling, overwhelmed with sorrow and fear.
